Beginners To Surfing: Frequent Questions

Thinking about going surfing at Jupiter?  If you’re a beginner, you’ll find this guide to some of the most asked surf questions useful.

How easy is surfing?

Seasoned surfers make moving through the waves at Jupiter look easy, but the reality is that it requires much strength and skill.  However, if you practice hard and have patience, it is easy for anyone to learn how to surf.  The best part of this is that every day is new and there are always new conditions in the ocean?

Is surfing expensive?

As with most sports, the price of gear can be expensive, but you do not necessarily have to spend a fortune.  Buying a board will be the largest cost, with beginner boards costing from $400.  If you are on a tight budget, it is possible to grab a second-hand board for less than this.

If you want to surf in cold water, you should also buy a solid wetsuit.  While designer wetsuit brands are pricey, there are plenty of makes which will give you the warmth and comfort that you require – without bankrupting you.

If you are going to be surfing quite a bit it is also worthwhile investing in a pair of beach sunglasses, which will help to prevent your eyes being damaged by the sun.  You can pick up a reasonable pair of beach sunglasses for about 30 bucks.  For this price, you should get UV B protection included.

Surf clothing can also be purchased, but it is by no means essential.  You can just wear regular clothes while surfing, though it can be easier to blend in if you have some new surf clothing.

Before you buy any gear, make sure that you do your research properly.  You might be tempted to buy the priciest gear right away, and then decide that you don’t like surfing as much as you thought, meaning that the money that you spent is wasted.

Basics of surfing

As with any skill, learning the basics of surfing needs practice and patience.  Taking lessons is usually considered the best way to master these, as your instructor can provide you with useful tips and help you to correct your mistakes.  This will also teach you how you can surf safely.  Most surf schools offer both group and private lessons, so it is worth exploring what your options are, if you have not already done this.

What size waves should beginners surf?

If you are a beginner, you should start by practicing with small waves of around 1-2 feet high.  Only move on to bigger waves when you are ready.  Not only will this mean you stay safe, it will also mean that you are not subject to hostility from surfers if you get in their way.

What are the best places for beginners to surf?

Some surf places are more suited to beginners than others, you be sure that you choose the beach you start surfing at carefully.  Look out for smaller waves that roll gently, preferably on top of a sandy bottom.

Choosing a surfboard

When you are choosing a board, it is vital that you select the board for your surfing level.  Learning to surf on a bad board is very frustrating and can slow down your progress.

Which is the best beginner’s surfboard?

Surfboards come in many different shapes and sizes, but if you are a beginner then a foam longboard is probably your best choice.  These boards are thick, wide and flat, and give you great stability and buoyancy.  This makes them easier for catching waves, getting up and then maintaining your balance.

Whatever you decide to do, don’t be tempted with buying a short board as your first board.  They might seem cool, but these boards are designed for maneuverability and speed and are therefore not the right boards for beginners.  If you think that you want to move on to a short board eventually, you might find an egg shape board which you can further your learning with.

What is the best size of board for a beginner?

Choosing the right board for your height is crucial.  As a rule, a long board should be around 3 feet taller than you are.  If you are 5 feet 10, you will find that a board which is around 9 feet long works best.

How many surfing lessons should I get?

For most, between 5 and 20 hours is enough to get you up, however you should remember that people learn at different rates.  Fitness and commitment affect your progress, so if it takes a while – go easy on yourself.

The first step which you will need to master is balancing on your board, which takes between 30 minutes to 3 hours.  Next you need to learn how to paddle out and then get on a wave.  This takes one or two hours.
